RENTON, Wash. – Washington State Patrol reports that a woman was arrested today after first stealing a taxi cab, and then leading police on a high speed chase down Interstate 405. As the police chase continues the driver of the stolen cab crashed, and then refused to get out of the car.
The bizarre episode unfolded late Saturday when a man called 911 and reported that someone had stolen his taxi and he was following it on Highway 99 at the 1st Avenue Bridge.
Dispatchers discouraged the man from following the taxi, and he agreed to meet with Seattle police and file a stolen vehicle report.
Meanwhile, a state trooper spotted the stolen taxi cab heading north on I-405 at SE 8th Street and began following as it got on and off the freeway a couple of times then began heading south on I-405.
Several other troopers joined the chase, and eventually the taxi hit a spike strip. The driver got off I-405 at the NE Park Drive exit in Renton as the tires went flat and finally crashed the taxi at Logan Avenue North and North 6th Street.
When troopers approached the vehicle, they could see that a woman had been driving the cab, but she would not get out of the vehicle, said WSP Trooper Rick Johnson.
Troopers finally had to smash out the taxi’s window to reach her. She resisted arrest, so troopers stunned her with a Taser and then cuffed her, Johnson said.
The woman appeared to be impaired, so she was taken to Harborview Medical Center for a blood draw. After that she was arrested for investigation of felony eluding, resisting arrest and DUI.
The woman was uninjured, but a couple of troopers were cut by glass while removing her from the taxi.
